When a purchasing manager asks Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity for "CE certified hydraulic pump manufacturers in China" or "MOQ for custom silicone parts", the answer increasingly comes as a summary with a few cited sources. Being one of those sources is the new version of ranking on page one, and for B2B exporters it is often a direct path to a qualified inquiry.

There is no secret switch. AI search tools build their answers from pages they can crawl, understand and trust. This guide covers what each major system needs, what to put on your pages, and how to measure the result.

How AI search picks its sources

All the major AI search tools work in a similar way: they run searches, read the pages that come back, and summarise them with links. That means two things for your website:

  1. If a crawler cannot reach or read the page, it cannot be cited. Blocked crawlers, content hidden behind scripts or logins, and product details locked inside PDFs and images are invisible.
  2. The page has to deserve the citation. A specific, well-structured answer from a credible manufacturer beats a vague brochure page every time.

Google is explicit: to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. There are no extra requirements and no special markup.

Step 1: Let the right crawlers in

Check your robots.txt file and any firewall, CDN or security plugin that blocks bots. Each AI search system has its own crawler:

CrawlerUsed forWhat blocking it does
GooglebotGoogle Search, including AI Overviews and AI ModeRemoves you from Google entirely
Google-ExtendedTraining and grounding in Google's other AI systems (not Search)Does not affect Search or AI Overviews
BingbotBing and Copilot answersRemoves you from Bing and Copilot
OAI-SearchBotChatGPT search resultsExcludes your pages from ChatGPT search answers
GPTBotContent that may be used to train OpenAI modelsOpts out of training only; does not affect ChatGPT search
PerplexityBotPerplexity search resultsExcludes you from Perplexity's index

A simple robots.txt that allows AI search while opting out of model training looks like this:

User-agent: *
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

Sitemap: https://www.yourcompany.com/sitemap.xml

Whether to block training crawlers is a business decision. What matters for citations is that Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach your pages. OpenAI notes that changes for its search crawler can take about a day to take effect.

Step 2: Put the facts buyers ask about in plain text

AI answers quote facts. Make the facts easy to find and easy to quote, on the page itself rather than in a downloadable catalog.

  • Specifications in HTML tables: dimensions, materials, tolerances, power, capacity. Not only in a PDF or an image of a table.
  • Commercial terms: MOQ, sample policy, typical lead time, Incoterms you offer, payment terms. These are some of the most common B2B questions.
  • Certifications with details: CE, UL, ISO 9001, RoHS, with the certifying body and certificate number. Link to the certificate if you can.
  • Markets and applications: which countries you ship to and which industries use the product.
  • One page per product family, with a descriptive title such as "Stainless Steel Ball Valves, DN15–DN100, CE and WRAS" instead of "Products 3".

Step 3: Answer real buyer questions on the page

Write down the questions your sales team answers every week and answer them on the relevant pages:

  • "What is the minimum order quantity for custom colours?"
  • "Can you supply with UL certification for the US?"
  • "How long does a first sample take?"

Put the question as a heading and the answer in the first one or two sentences below it, then add detail. This format is easy for both people and AI systems to lift into an answer.

Step 4: Show who stands behind the information

AI search systems, like Google itself, prefer sources that look accountable.

  • An About page with the company's legal name, address, year founded, factory size and real photos.
  • Named people: an export manager or engineer as the author of technical guides.
  • Consistent company details across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and trade portals.
  • Third-party mentions: trade association listings, trade show exhibitor pages, industry media, customer case studies with permission. AI answers often cite these alongside or instead of your own site.

Step 5: Use structured data correctly

Structured data does not unlock AI citations on its own; Google says there is no special schema for AI features. It still helps search systems understand your pages, and it must match what visitors can see.

  • Organization on the home or About page: name, logo, address, contact.
  • Product on product pages, where you show the details on the page.
  • BreadcrumbList for your category structure.

Never add structured data for information that is not visible on the page.

Step 6: Get the technical basics right

  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages that load for visitors in Europe and North America, not only in China. Test from abroad.
  • Server-rendered HTML. If your product details only appear after heavy JavaScript runs, some crawlers will miss them.
  • An XML sitemap submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • One language per URL with proper hreflang tags if you run several language versions.

Step 7: Measure whether it is working

WhereWhat you can see
Google Search ConsoleClicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the Web search type (not shown separately)
Bing Webmaster Tools, AI Performance reportCitations in Copilot and Bing AI answers, cited pages and the queries that led to them (public preview since February 2026)
Google Analytics 4Referral visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and similar sources
Manual checksAsk the AI tools your buyers' questions once a month and note which sources they cite

Track inquiries, not only visits. A handful of qualified RFQs from AI search referrals is worth more than thousands of untargeted page views.

Quick checklist

  • Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot allowed in robots.txt and at the firewall
  • Specs, MOQ, lead time and certifications in plain HTML, not only in PDFs
  • Buyer questions answered under clear headings
  • About page, named authors and consistent company details everywhere
  • Organization and Product structured data that matches the visible page
  • Fast pages for overseas visitors, sitemap submitted to Google and Bing
  • Monthly check of Search Console, Bing AI Performance and AI referrals in analytics

FAQ

Do I need a special file like llms.txt to appear in AI search?

Not for Google. Google says there are no extra requirements, special files or special structured data for AI Overviews and AI Mode; normal SEO best practices apply. Other AI search tools rely on their own crawlers reading your normal pages, so clear, crawlable HTML matters far more than any extra file.

If I block GPTBot, will my site disappear from ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI uses separate crawlers. GPTBot collects content that may be used for training; OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search. You can block one and allow the other.

How do I know if AI search is citing my website?

Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the normal Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (in public preview since February 2026) that counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI answers. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, look for referral visits from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai in your analytics.

Is getting cited by AI search different from normal SEO?

Mostly not. AI answers are built from pages the search systems can crawl, index and trust, so the basics still decide everything. The difference is emphasis on clear, specific, quotable facts that answer a buyer's question directly.
